Playing With Stars In EQ8, a tutorial – Part 8: Designing in EQ8 for Foundation Piecing

Today we have another “15 Minutes of Play” tutorial for EQ8 software, in our  Star design table runner series.  And, while we are going to use a variety of tools, we’re also going to be covering Foundation piecing and Sashing!

Let the playtime begin!

EQ8 TUTORIAL:

Open EQ8 software and click FILE > OPEN PROJECT, on the main menu.  A window will pop up showing you a list of your recently opened project files.

Select  “EQ8 Tutorial – Star Table Runner” and click OK.  Note:  We created this file in lesson #1.

The PROJECT SKETCHBOOK menu will appear, but click the CLOSE button in the lower right.

While I typically design the primary blocks for my project, before I design the sashing, this particular project we’re going to start with designing our sashing.  The sashing blocks will also be Foundation pieced.

Click on the BLOCK Worktable.quilt worktable

Click NEW BLOCK > PIECED > EASY DRAW

Set Block Width = 3″ and Height = 6″ and Snaps Horizontal = 12 and Snaps Vertical = 24.

Click on the LINE tool.  Use your mouse to click, hold, drag, release to create a line slicing this rectangle block in half vertically.

Click on the LINE tool and draw a line from the center of the top of this block at the 1-1/2″ to the sides at the 3″ mark.

Replicate the step above for the lower half of this block.  E.G. from the middle point of the bottom part of the block using the LINE tool, click, hold, drag release a line to the 3″ mark.

Again, we’ll use the LINE tool to draw lines as shown below (1 1/2 ” vertical to 1 1/2″ horizontal)

Click COLOR > PAINTBRUSH and click on the desired fabric or color, lastly click on the patch in your block you wish to color as desired.  Repeat selecting fabrics or colors, as desired, to color your block.

Click ADD TO SKETCHBOOK to save this block.

Click on the QUILT WORKTABLE > NEW QUILT > LAYOUT

Change settings as follows:

  • 6 blocks Horizontal and 2 blocks Vertical.
  • Finished size of blocks 6″ height and width.
  • Sashing 3″

QUILT layout

Your Quilt Layout will look like:

BORDERS will be set to zero for this design.

Click on DESIGN > BLOCK TOOLS > SET BLOCK

Select the block we just created and click on the sashing blocks to set.

This simple design offers many possibilities.  For the 6″x6″ blocks you could paint them (as shown above) with a solid piece of fabric, or set a block of your choice (shown below).  For this design, I set a block we previously used in this tutorial series, the eight-pointed star.

Click SAVE TO SKETCHBOOK

Click FILE >SAVE PROJECT

Now, let’s go over Foundation piecing for our sashing blocks.

Click BLOCK WORKTABLE

Click File > PRINT > FOUNDATION PATTERN

Click on the NUMBERING

PRINT FOUNDATION PAPER numbering

You have the option to CHANGE NUMBERS, as desired.

Click PREVIEW then PRINT to print your foundation papers. Then click CLOSE.

Congratulations.  You’ve created another Star table runner design in EQ software and you’ve also learned how to create your own Foundation paper designs!
