Craftsy Class Review – The Quilter’s Path: Plan It, Stitch It, Quilt It, with Christa Watson

Today I’m delighted to share insights about a new class on Craftsy, called “The Quilter’s Path: Plan It, Stitch It, Quilt It“, with Christa Watson.  This is definitely an excellent class for newbies to free-motion quilting, but also a great opportunity for those that might want to lean some fun and fast techniques for incorporating your walking foot with free-motion quilting designs.  Christa shares plenty of tips and inspiration, that will help you plan out how to quilt your projects and get them finished.

Christa Watson is an award-winning sit-down machine quilter, designer, teacher and author.  She’s the author of two books: “Machine Quilting With Style” and “The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting.”   She also enjoys traveling to teach at quilt shows, quilt shops and to quilt guilds.

You can quilt it yourself on your sewing machine! Join quilter Christa Watson and discover simple techniques for machine quilting with a walking foot or free-motion stitches. Along the way, learn the most efficient way to travel around your quilt as you quilt it.

Students get a free downloadable pattern for the “Pinwheels quilt pattern” designed by Christa.  This is a fun and fast quilt design, which Christa uses to show you how to quilt in this class.  Of course, you can use a practice sandwich, as well as apply the designs on any project you wish, but this is a great design that I think many will be inspired to create and use for the FMQ lessons in this virtual class.

Here is a summary of the six lessons provided in this class.  Don’t forget, like all classes at Craftsy, you can take these classes at your leisure, start/stop/repeat according to your schedule and interest.

Christa kicks off this class with this lesson providing a great Introduction, as well as insights on using a Walking Foot vs Dual-Feed, selecting Fabric Thread and Warming Up, as well as stitching Wavy Lines.

In this lesson, Christa shows us a variety of beautiful walking foot designs: straight lines, shattered lines, decorative lines, continuous spirals, square spirals.  She also shares a collection of her inspirational quilts and discusses the quilting designs she applied to create interest and texture.

Great lesson for the basics of free-motion quilting, Christa’s  favorite supplies, with plenty of FMQ tips to help you quilt your quilt, as well as designs in this lesson:  loop designs, fun loops for single, double and triple loops, loops & flowers.

Building on your skills acquired in the previous lessons, in this lesson you’ll learn how to create a large variety of free-motion quilting designs:boxes, switchbacks and swirl motifs with plenty of variations of each family of designs (e.g.  ribbon candy. crazy eights, etc).

Christa shows how fun it is to combine free-motion quilting designs in this lesson, where she teaches you a variety of swirl combinations, Woodgrains and waves, and improv designs.  I also love her inspirational quote “Aiming for texture vs perfection”.

In the final lesson, Christa covers combining walking foot and free-motion quilting techniques. She also shares insights for planning your quilt using an approach called “divide and conquer”, one section at a time to add texture. She shares several quilt samples and shares insights on how she quilted them to add texture, while combining designs taught in this class.

This is an absolutely perfect class for beginners, as you will learn how to quilt your projects using a walking foot and free-motion quilting techniques.  But I think it is also a good class for those with experience that may want to round out their skills, and learn more tips and designs.  It is a fun class packed with inspiration, tips, as well as beautiful and easy walking foot and free-motion quilting designs that can help you quilt your quilts with traditional or modern designs, as you desire.

Christa shared a link so new students can get 50% off the class using this link, which is valid through 4/4/17:

Lastly, while Christa will be teaching at the upcoming QuiltCon East, her classes are sold out.  But she is holding a meet ‘n greet/book signing at QuiltCon on Friday, February 24, from 12-1 in the Electric Quilt Company booth # 337. Copies of her books will be available for purchase and it’s a great chance to stop by and say hi.
